I found out it doesn't work with publishing site with work flow templates, is that true?

Will, your posting helps me a lot.

I found the same thing, I tested successfully on a testing computer, it worked.

But on the production server, it didn't capture the deletion at all. After reading your post, I checked the template I use for the two are diffrents.

If I use publishing site template, it worked, but if I use publishing site with work flow template, it doesn't work.

But our internet publishing site was set up only having one template there, it's the publishing site with work flow.

Apparently we cannot use the tool, now I will have to uninstall it.

I installed the Site Delete Capture Feature on a testing computer it worked.
Today I tried to install it on production server, it said successfully installed, and I activated the feature.

But after I deleted a subsite, it didn't save anything back up folder at all. The folder is empty.

Even when deleting a site, I cann't see a waiting image showing deleting one site, that I can see when I deleted a site on a testing server which the feature worked.
It seems it didn't trigger the feature at all when deleting the site.

what could be wrong?

Let me prefix this by saying that I have installed the MSIT Site Delete Capture Utility in my test environment (single server w/ separate DB) and have had no issues outside of the known no-email bug.

Following the document, I've tried multiple variations to get the utility to work with 2 front end servers and a single back end running Central Admin. At first, I tried only installing it (copying files, folders, dll) on the WFEs (running install.bat once for the farm and configuring the Capture Configuration website), but then realized portions were missing for me to activate the feature within Central Admin. I've since installed the package (meaning - copy files, folders, dll) on the back end server as well.

Still no luck. As long as I have the feature activated, I get the error "Delete site operation cancelled by user. Check the log files for additional details." when deleting an empty site. There is no log file created in the backup location.

Tried both local and UNC path for backups. Editing all of the ConfigurationForReceiverDLL.xml files on all 3 servers (eventually) as well as the AppConfig list within the created Capture Configuration webpage.

Can anyone give me definitive directions for configuring this in a farm? Or is it that flaky and not worth the effort?

I've spent way too much time on this, finding quite a few bugs posted. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

The difference seem to be the "ProcessUser" ; in the last case, the "ProcessUser" is the user account, owner of the personal site.
And the error seem to come from "Sharepoint" an not "IT Site Delete Capture".
The backup directory "d:\Backup" is total control for everyone.
There is only one front-end server MOSS 2007 in my configuration.

Have you a idea ?

I tried to add custom site template name to FeatureStapling.xml - didn't help me much.

I got the tool installed and it successfully backs up the sites I delete, but no email goes out. I have specified an SMTP server in the AppConfig list, but I can't figure out where it grabs the To address for the email notification. Other SharePoint notifications get sent normally from the server.

I'm currently looking for the source code for the "new" version of "MSIT Site Delete Capture 1.0" (from April 30th 2007) - called "Microsoft IT Site Delete Capture 1.0 LE" (from June 12th 2008) - both available as wsp's from http://governance.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx

However, only the old source code (from April 30th 2007) seems to be available at http://governance.codeplex.com/SourceControl/ListDownloadableCommits.aspx

Does anyone know if the source code for the new version can be downloaded from somewhere? Or would it be possible to have the source code posted at CodePlex?

New Post: How to create solution package in order to deploy a sharepoint site from development to staging/production environment

I'm new to the administration of the sharepoint server 2007 and I have a task of creating a solution package (with the most important part a feature.xml file) that will deploy a sharepoint collection from development to the staging environment and later on to the production as well.
I have surfed the net and all I could find is how to create feature.xml file for a certain features but not for the entire site collection or just one sharepoint site.

I know how to backup the site using stsadm command tool and create the batch file and schedule the jobs as well as how to restore those sites. What I'm kind of stuck with is how to move them from one environment to another - there's no documentation on that or at least I couldn't find it.

I'd greatly appreciate if someone could help me to resolve this mystery and solve my problem.

I’m completely desperate as I need to move forward and I don’t know how to proceed as none of my books that I have talk even remotely about this.

The question that I ask myself is this possible at all and if there is another way of moving sites/site collections from development to staging/production.

Please HELP as this is very important.

The documentation talks about a inputdbmove.txt file but there is nothing that shows you how this text file should be formated. The documentation also speaks of a SiteCol.exe that is not part of the download package. Can anyone assist with getting these? I have content dbs that are 100's of GB in size that I need to break into smaller chunks to migrate.

Will Codeplex re-apply permissions to the restored site or will this need to be done manually?

I am trying to fix the same issue. I tried following the post by Brian, I copied the required line into FeatureStapling.xml but when I tried it out it still did not work.

Does anyone have the same problem? any ideas?

Hi Sameer,

The LCMWeb folder is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft IT\Team Site Life Cycle Management\LCMWeb

What I have modified to make it work was the tag <identity impersonate="true" /> at the end of the web.config file.

Hope It helps.
What i realize afterwords is that using this method is just a workaround because I have an authentication issue that i have not yet solved. Is there someone from the development team who can tell what would be the consequence of doing so? I don't see any right now, but I don't want to perform this action on production servers if it can cause security issues!

I used stsadm activatefeature using the -force and it worked. Its also documented in the install guide.

Well, i did find a solution to Request Time Out caused by MS IT Site Delete which was in this thread http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointdevelopment/thread/5fb13f00-e557-4f97-9483-cb32867b3505/?ffpr=0

This is what i added to web.config at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\web.config

I have tested the solution by delete site collection which was 2GB and the operation was cleanly done. I could even restore from the backup. The delete operation took around 21 mins and restore around 14 mins. well this will be unique to each environment but just to make other people about rough estimates to configure their timeout values.

I have had the same issue until this morning!

I finally installed the tool using the service account, and i used the same service account when prompted but still... So in the web.config located in the lcmWeb folder, i changed the impersonate tag to true (natively false). It then worked perfectly!

I should appreciate and thanks for creating this utility.

But, during my testing I came across this issue

The site collection which I was trying to delete was above 1 GB. When I started to Delete after the conformation the web browser waited for a minute(approx. not timed) before I saw the error message SharePoint page with error "Request timed out" and the operation halted. When I checked the backup location folder the site was baked up with size of around 1 GB. Immediately I went to Central Admin to verify if the site collection was deleted or not. To my surprise I could still see the site collection in the site collection list. But when I select this site collection I could not see any info which we see on right hand about owner, URL, db name etc... I tried to browse to this site but got 400 Bad Request HTTP Header.

I tried to restore the site collection with same path using stsadm. stsadm complained that the path is already used by existing site.

Another site already exists at '/sites/formstest'. Choose a new URL, or specify

the -overwrite flag to overwrite the existing site.

When I try using the -overwrite parameter I got the following error

No content databases are available for this operation. Create a content database

, and then try the operation again. To create a content database, click "Content

databases" on the Application Management page, select the Web application to us

e, and then click "Add a content database".

I could not delete the site using this command "stsadm -o deletesite -url http://server/sites/collection I got the following error

The system cannot find the path specified. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070003)

Finally I restored the backup to new path and at least the backup was good and restored successfully, but pages were broken as links changed.

I tried to delete the site using SharePoint API but the same error message as I got with stsadm (Well stsadm internally uses the SharePoint API so both the methods I tried were same but just wanted to give it a shot)

Cannot find a way to remove this orphaned site collection name. Guess I would have to hit the database but do not want to do it before I am sure that no one else can help me out with this.

Also is there a way to stop this from happening if the site collections are big.

To answer some of your questions

Even i am not sure of which version to use, but i ended up using the LE version without email notifications. And the comment at end is not true. I used this and never did get an email after the site/web is deleted and backed up.

Where are snapshots stored - UNC path?
-- The snapshots are stored at path which is defined in the XML found at %commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\MSITSiteDelete\ConfigurationEventReceiver.xml by default the path is set to D:\Backup

Is there a way to manage/delete these through the UI?
-- i am not sure what information are you seeking. But you cannot see/manage the deleted site/webs from the web. If you need to restore the deleted site/web then you need to use the command line.

Does this work with multiple WFEs? A few posts suggest this is problematic.
-- Yes. the backup path location has to same across all the servers in Farm irrespective of their role. and you can find the .bak file on the server where the user session was. You can create a shared location and can refer to UNC path in this format \\servername\deletedsitebackup

What are implications of retracting the solution?
-- again i could not understand the question.

My experience is not good with this utility. If the site collection/web is more than a GB then the operation times out, the backup though is made successfully but then the site is not cleanly removed from database leaving back traces which i could not remove using all tool know to me. So i have to restore the deleted site to new path...
