Commented Issue: Write access to Backup Folder [18406]

We have also encountered the issue where the backups were not being generated. Our workaround was to grant "Authenticated users" Write access to the backup folders on all the WFEs in our farm.

Please update your documentation to cover this.

The backup operation seems to run as the user account that is logged into SharePoint. It works great when a member of the Administrators group does it. However, if a non-privileged user tries, you will get:

Error loading and running event receiver
Microsoft.SharePoint.Site.RecyclBin.DeleteEventReceiver in Microsoft.SharePoint.Site.RecycleBin, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=98e95e81f8f8e48206. Additonal information is below.

: Access to path '[YOUR BACKUP PATH]\Log\RecycleBin.log' is denied.

Therefore, you must grant the write access to the backup folder to the "Authenticated Users" group (or group that contains the list of people who have permissions in Sharepoint).

Has anyone gotten the Site Recycle bin to backup to a UNC patch instead of a local path?

Also, does this work with Site Use Confirmation and Deletion?

Just deployed this solution on my farm and while I was able to deploy and activate it I get the following error when I delete a site and no backup of the site happens:

Commented Issue: Folder permission [15435]

In our test environment, we found that we need to grant "Everyone" read and write access to the target folder in order for the Site Recycle Bin to write the backup file and log into it.
This is a bit dangerous (especially to those creative users) which user can do a map drive to the folder and mess with the backup files and logs.
Any suggestion to over come this?

You can do a workaround for now. Move the files in the folder where the site recycle bin tool writes his backups/logs to another folder where everyone is not added. You can make a script for this and schedule it frequent to lower the risk.

This is an error I am getting from my development environment, and after grabbing the wss 3.0 wsp and deploying it, I am still getting it.

Issue : Missing server file or server configuration issues

Server side files are referenced in the content databases, but are not installed on the server. Without these files, the sites may not function completely or the content may not render correctly. Also, upgrade or post upgrade issues may occur if these files are not available in the new version environment.The following event receiver assembly(s) are referenced by the content, but they are not installed on the web server

Assembly = MS.IT.SiteDeleteCapture, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=98e95e81f8e48206, Count = 3, Status = Missing

Most likely this is due to the dll in the wsp not being MS.IT.SiteDeleteCapture, but rather being Microsoft.SharePoint.Site.RecycleBin.

Now I cant find this original dll and cant get my development environment any further along. Can someone please advise?

It was a work around that probably fit only my needs. Take a look at moving to SP2010 SP1 and the new site recycle bin. Test, test, test before deploying though. All of my SP1 installs have been brand new... It does not look like this issue is going to be reviewed or fixed unfortunately.

Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately we have 100's of site collections and I can't lock them down in the same way as you describe above.

I *DID* have this working for sites on this server but needed to add a new content database and now any "top" sites deleted in that new content database are not captured as a *.bak file, only sub-sites. Weird huh?

I (like you) don't think this is a permissions issue as it is working for subsites. I also assume the solution is installed correctly or I would see no backup files at all. (I see sub-site backup files on delete as mentioned above.)

All I can figure is it's something to do with how the top sites in the new content database are registered in the configuration database...?

The initial fear was someone deleting a top-level site collection. However, if there are subsites under that collection root, SharePoint will not allow the delete to occur. In this case, we had a number of subsites so the risk was mitigated because SharePoint will not allow a site collection with subsites to be deleted. I now use the SharePoint 2010 SP1 recycle bin, which works great. Up until the SP1 recycle bin, I would create a subsite in each site collection and lock it down to just admins but name it "Site Delete Prevention" so that I and they knew what it was and why it was there. Cheesy fix, I know, but if I wanted to use the tool and prevent someone killing a toplevel site, its was the best solution I came up with. Like I said before, I now use SP2010 SP1's recycle bin.

I am receiving this same error. Funny thing is I HAD this working and now it is not. The change I made was adding another content database. New sites deleted from the new content database write to the log but the backup file is never created...?

I am experiencing an issue with the Site Recycle Bin solution in that it is not capturing any deleted sites or site collections weather they were from an upgraded 2007 installation or created new under 2010. I have also not found anything in the logs.

I have installed the Site Recycle Bin solution on a SharePoint Server 2010 farm and configured the configuration.xml file as well as changed permissions on the \backup directory to allow Everybody to have write access.

The feature is showing up as installed & activated on the web applications and I have also uninstalled/removed the solution then reinstalled it too - all with Powershell commands not stsadm.

Does anybody have any suggestions on getting this to work? The ms.it.sitedelete saved several of my users bacon and I would like to continue to protect them after our upgrade from MOSS2007.
