We have also encountered the issue where the backups were not being generated. Our workaround was to grant "Authenticated users" Write access to the backup folders on all the WFEs in our farm.

Please update your documentation to cover this.

The backup operation seems to run as the user account that is logged into SharePoint. It works great when a member of the Administrators group does it. However, if a non-privileged user tries, you will get:

Microsoft.SharePoint.Site.RecyclBin.DeleteEventReceiver in Microsoft.SharePoint.Site.RecycleBin, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=98e95e81f8f8e48206. Additonal information is below.

: Access to path '[YOUR BACKUP PATH]\Log\RecycleBin.log' is denied.

Therefore, you must grant the write access to the backup folder to the "Authenticated Users" group (or group that contains the list of people who have permissions in Sharepoint).

In our test environment, we found that we need to grant "Everyone" read and write access to the target folder in order for the Site Recycle Bin to write the backup file and log into it.
This is a bit dangerous (especially to those creative users) which user can do a map drive to the folder and mess with the backup files and logs.
Any suggestion to over come this?

You can do a workaround for now. Move the files in the folder where the site recycle bin tool writes his backups/logs to another folder where everyone is not added. You can make a script for this and schedule it frequent to lower the risk.

I noticed the sites I deleted where not back upped as expected. I took a look at the sources and found that at installation the following happens:
1. The delete event receiver is attached to every existing site collection and site
2. A feature which adds the event receiver to a site is stapled to every known site template.

The second part is the problem. Any new site collection or site based on a custom site template provisioned after the Recycle Bin feature is activated will not be back upped.

I downloaded, extracted the package for 2007 and continue to addsolution according to the installation manual and run:
'STSADM –o addsolution –filename “C:\TEMP\SharePoint Site Recycle Bin.wsp”'
I got 'Command line error.' and the solution is not added.

I also have deployed this Sharepoint Site Recycle Bin and getting the below error message when trying to create a new site collection and also when trying to deactivate the feature:

I'm using WSS 3.0 (v12.0.6425.1000) running on Win2k3 SE with SP2. I just recently downloaded the SharePoint Site Recycle Bin.

I have the same issue, but more importantly I cannot retract the Feature. When I try to retract, I get:

I'm experiencing the same issues. I did a fresh install and am recieving the error:

Encountered the same error when attempting to globally deploy the WSS v3 version of the solution. The farm is on version 12.0.0.6529 according to the Servers in Farm page in the Central Admin site, and is WSS v3 + Search Server Express 2008.

The error message I received is identical to the one reported here, and is visible when I attempt to deploy the solution both from in the Central Admin site and through STSADM. There are no timer jobs shown related to the deployment process, and the deployment still fails after a run of STSADM's EXECADMSVCJOBS operation.

I get the same error. Once I've installed the .wsp (which installs fine), creating subsequent sites produces the error. I've tried de- and reinstalling to no avail.

I got the same message. I am using the Sharepoint Recycle Bin for MOSS (2007). I dont see any build info on the download page nor in the zip file.

In SharePont 2010 multi server farm. I have installed the tool based on the User Guide (using PowerShell commands). Have created a directory on a non-system drive on each server (D:\SPSiteRecycleBackup) and have updated the configuration.xml files as instructed. I also created a directory for the log files (D:\SPSiteRecycleBackup\Logs).

I also added the following entry to the web.config files <safecontrols> <SafeControl Assembly="Microsoft.SharePoint.Site.RecycleBin, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=98e95e81f8e48206" Namespace="Microsoft.SharePoint.Site.RecycleBin" TypeName="*" Safe="True" />

The Site Collection and Sub Sites are still deleted fine. However there is no Capture of deletion information or Logs and I am getting the following error:

Event 6875, SharePoint Foundation

Looks like the user for this event is NT AUTHORITY\IUSR

I validated that the the WSS_ADMIN_WPG, WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG, and WSS_WPG local groups on the server were correctly populated.

Any Ideas on how to resolve this? What App Pool does the tool use/impersonate when it runs?

I got this error too..

The Event Log message states: ":The source was not found, but some or all event logs could not be searched. Inaccessible logs: Security".

I followed all the steps you took in your original post and got the same error message.

I fixed it in my case by logging in interactively on the WFE with the install account and deleting a site from there. once I'd done that I was subsequently able to create and delete sites from other machines with other accounts over the network, as a normal user would.

I think it does something with the event log the first time it runs, but not sure what, I haven't looked into it. Just glad it works - hope it works for you too.

I got same error.
I observed that it happend to the default MS Site collection templates e.g. Team site.
When I choose our customized Site Collection template the site is created, but after you delete the site - Nothing is stored in the backup folder you setup in the Configuration file.
I took a look to the event log and sts log, but no error trace is recorded.

We have MOSS 2007, SP2 version 12.0.0.6529 with following updates:

I am getting a similar error when I create a new site collection.

I have installed the version for WSS 3.0 and SharePoint 2007 following the installation documentation as instructed.

In Central Administartion the feature appears to be activated.

However, when I try to create a new site collection I get the same error message as above (but with different GUID) in the browser window.

So I then went back in to central admin, retracted and then deleted the feature, and now I can create new site collections without error.

I have repeated the install twice and each time I get the above error when creating a new site collection.

I have SharePoint Server 2007 + SP2 + WSS 3.0 SP2 + Cumulative update 971538 + hotfix 936008.

If you copied the command line syntax directly from the setup and configuration guide you will need to replace each "-". I would recommend entering the command manually. For additional information on the STSADM addsolution operation, see also http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263162(office.12).aspx.
