How to Troubleshoot?

How do I troubleshoot issues post a successful install of this project? I've tried creating sites (using the blank or team site templates - the out of the box ones) and then deleting them and nothing is happening. I can't see anything in the logs that is indicative of a problem. The directory I've specified is currently open (read/write) to all of my service account users and any possible account that would need rights to write to that location.

So simply, what steps can the group recommend for troubleshooting why I am not seeing a *.bak file in my selected backup directory post the delete of a site/subsite within my sharepoint farm?

Cause of issue (now resolved) --> It was a database schema error on a new content database I had added...
